During the war, an eight year old boy, named Alimami, who used to live happily with his parents and other members of his family in a small thatched house in  the  western province, found himself in one of the refugee camps in Freetown, with an amputated leg; a consequence of the war.  His parents could no longer afford to look after him as they had lost everything they owned during the war.  Consequently, fate left them no choice but to abandon him in the camp to be cared for by volunteers.

Furthermore, due to inadequate shelter and poverty, Alimami was left to live in the refugee camp to survive on a once-a day or no meal basis and sometimes made to fend  for food for whilst others simply died of mal-nutrition. He does not attend any school.

What makes Alimami a sad story in particular is the fact that he has had a prostheses fixed onto one of his legs and has not had the opportunity to have it assessed nor has it been adjusted as he has gotten older. The edges of his prostheses and the whole of his leg are also covered in sores which have led to extreme infection. The sole of the prostheses is worn out as a result of this, there  has  been a marked decrease in his mobility. Alimami is always in pain. He is an unhappy child!
