DEVASTATED BY THE WAR IN 1991
Sierra Leone is a small country which has been devastated by civil war. This conflict is referred to as the “Rebel War” by Sierra Leoneans.  During the “War” a wave of terror ripped through the country consisting of murder, rape, amputations, and brutal beatings, abduction of children, burning of homes and looting by a fraction of the revolutionary group. The war has left the country devastated and the people traumatized. Thousands lost their lives as a result and large numbers of people fled to neighbouring countries to seek refuge.
Sierra Leone emerged from a decade of civil war in 2002, with the help of Britain, the former colonial power, and a large United Nations peacekeeping mission. More than 17,000 foreign troops disarmed tens of thousands of rebels and militia fighters. Consequently, the country now faces the challenge of reconstruction.

Due to years of civil war and dictatorial ruling, the country was brought to its knees and the educational system brought to a standstill. The majority of people who fled the country, to neighboring countries for refuge, on their return lost their jobs and therefore could no longer pay for their children’s education. After this tragic event, most children have been exposed to child trafficking, emotional and psychological abuse, sexual exploitation and molestation.

Sierra Leone still remains poor and many children continue to be out of education, especially in the rural areas, such as Waterloo (in the Western area of the country) which was one of the most affected places as rebel fighters and the militia made it a base for their cruel activities.  As a result, of the aftermath of the war, the country is still struggling to find its feet, and that is why Bethany International House for Children has sincerely and whole heartedly decided to come to its aid by establishing a Christian Charitable Organization whose aim is to assist and support the victims of this area, particularly children.
